LAKE PLACID — Summer is when rivalries are born in the pool. For 12-year old Emily Helterhoff of the Highlands Hurricanes and 11-year old Maggie Brumfield of the Hardee Swim Team, Saturday's Lake Placid Aquatic Invitational gave everyone a glimpse of the future of girls swimming in the Heartland. Helterhoff and Brumfield competed in six events in the girls 11-12 category during the event at the Green Dragon pool, with the Hurricane swimmer getting the best of the Wildcat in five events –– with just two weeks of work before the event. "Emily has been just short of amazing," said Hurricanes coach Marvin Wolfe. LAKE PLACID –– The chance to swim at the collegiate level is something Lake Placid's Michael Wilkes has sacrificed and worked hard for. Wilkes, a standout swimmer for the Green Dragons for the last three years, made all the work pay off when he signed a scholarship with Mars Hill College on Friday. Mars Hill is a Division II school, which is located about 20 miles north of Asheville, N. C. "I've always wanted to swim in college and to accomplish that is a dream come true," said Wilkes. "I visited the campus on spring break and it's up in the hills and is just beautiful, and the coach and the other swimmers made me feel comfortable." ...more
