I received my trim notice late last week; it seems the good old boys are doing it again. If you have lowered my assessment from last year why have my taxes gone up $302.12 this year? Does any one care to answer? Will you say it's because of the state on school taxes? ...more

Obama Listens To Us Let's give President Obama at least a B+. The Republicans are upset with him, the Democrats are upset with him and the lobbyists are upset with him. How refreshing that the president is listening to the America people with a 65 percent approval rating and not the establishment good old boys and girls. ...more

Four years ago, Highlands County voters saw an active campaign for sheriff. In the primaries, four qualified candidates squared off in debates, and the November election saw two very qualified candidates. This election campaign, while very heated, was run with no mud slinging and ranting promises. ...more

If there was ever a pop performer who could reasonably be expected to improve with age, it's Randy Newman. Newman's first albums may have been released during the Age of Aquarius, but his songs didn't chronicle the dawn of anything. ...more

Carl Cool running for county commission is the biggest joke since WMD. The good old boys are at work again! Cool stated his decision was based on advice from close friends and prayers. Close friends being the present commission-less Barbara Stewart, and the prayers of the commissioners hoping the good old boys are not caught with their hands in the cookie jar again. Barbara Stewart has been a thorn in the side of the present county commission for the last four years because she has the grit to ask questions and go against the grain of the good old boys. This is the reason they would like to get rid of her. ...more

I am an 80-year-old woman who is very proud of Hillary Rodham Clinton for having the guts to go head to head in this political arena to run for president. This letter has does not have anything to do with how I vote. In management, I worked in a man's world my entire working life. I know quite well that no matter what Hillary does it will be wrong. She will be critized, made fun of and lied about. If Hillary beieves in something and stands strong she will be too hard. If she weeps she will weak. It's the way the "good old boys club" works. ...more

In addition to the critical national issues confronting us as citizens, and the state issues we are concerned about, there is one issue no one has even thought about yet, but which is about to occur. The Iraqi war and the national economy are the two most critical issues facing us today. Iraq, the economy and Afghanistan are still foremost in the minds of most Americans. ...more

I read with amusement the Highlands today article on electronic messages dated Feb. 1 about Mr. David Flowers getting only a letter of reprimand from assistant county administrator Mr. Helms for sending instant messages. I don't know about anyone else but that article really smells when you read between the lines. After the firing of three employees for doing the same thing, save the baloney. Using county equipment for personal use, no matter what the circumstances are, is still against policy. Mr. Helms messed up with the termination of first three persons. Policy again dictates the proper type of disciplinary action that should have been issued. It appears what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander. I guess it just goes to show you, if you're one of the big dogs or good old boys, which ever you prefer, who gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar, it's still business as usual. I wait with great anticipation the next chapter of Highlands Gate! ...more
