WINTER HAVEN — Three Red Devils scored in double figures on Thursday night as the Avon Park girls basketball team started slow but finished strong during a 52-32 victory over Class 2A All Saints Academy. It was the Red Devils' first action since Dec. 21, though AP coach Paulette Daley said the team showed little signs of holiday rust. "We tend to start slow anyway," she said. FROSTPROOF — A win is a win, even if it wasn't pretty. The Avon Park girls basketball team showed what it takes to win ugly on Thursday, as turnovers, sloppy passes and the prototypical slow start marred the Red Devils for most of the game, allowing Frostproof to hang around longer than expected in Avon Park's 47-38 win at Jim Boyd Gymnasium on Thursday. "This was just typical of the type of game that this team has been giving all season," AP head coach Paulette Daley said. "We're midway through the season, so you'd have thought it would have sunk in by now. "We need to play a full game. Be aggressive at the start and aggressive at the end. AVON PARK — Nobody can tell the Avon Park girls basketball team it can't handle pressure. The Red Devils proved that time and time again in their 46-45 comeback victory over Palmetto in a Class 4A-District 10 showdown on Thursday night. Avon Park, which routed Braden River 69-46 on Tuesday, got all it could handle with Palmetto's "box-and-one" defense, but still found a way to squeak out a win. ...more
