When the Titanic first hit the iceberg the people were in denial that this mighty ship could not fail, thinking that even God could not sink her. It is said that if a few things had been done, many more souls would have been saved. Things like: if all of the life boats had been filled, if wooden doors had been removed and grouped together or if the captain had allowed the ship to travel at its correct speed, the iceberg could have been avoided and all would have survived. ...more

So Dale Gillis (Christianity vs. Rapturism, March 3) has concluded that since some so-called "Rapturists" are reading "The Secrets of Enoch" (which almost no one considers authoritative), all belief in the Rapture is bogus. Does anyone else see a rending of the laws of logic here? It matters little that a trifling handful of so-called Rapturists (who believe that Jesus will one day remove his church from the Earth before cleansing and preparing it for his return to rule and reign) are wacky in other areas. That doesn't cancel the orthodoxy of a belief they rightly maintain in another. Indeed, a huge component of biblical Christianity has long been convinced that passages such as 1 Thes' 4:15-17 speak clearly of a gathering of God's people, dead and alive, out of the world to be "with the Lord" prior to the cataclysmic judgments of the Tribulation. The Apostle Paul believed this, and he wrote long before 1950. His followers don't typically read "The Secrets of Enoch." Nor do they deserve a tarring with Mr. Gillis' broad brush. ...more

I am an 83-year-old man who proudly served my country for the latter part of World War II and also the Korean War. I believe that the generation before mine was every bit as good as mine, maybe even better. There are not too many of my generation left and almost none from the generation before us. I am not sure that I thoroughly understand the meaning of "the greatest generation" but I do know they are referring to my generation and for this I am grateful. I also know that there were some good times and some bad times, but I wouldn't trade any of them for the world. ...more

How many people read every last page in the Highlands Today? I did today; a nice quiet Sunday, and guess what I found? It was an announcement from the U.S. Navy. The Navy has announced that it has indefinitely suspended its plans to drop live bombs at the Avon Park Bombing Range; why? Well not because of the hundreds of signatures my sister and I were able to collect standing out in front of Big Lots last year, to protest it. Seems just like all of us "plain folks," the Navy is short of funds. ...more
