LAKE PLACID — State Representative Denise Grimsley's condo used more water than any other piece of residential property in Lake Placid through all of 2007 and the first three months of 2008, the town's water usage records indicate. The condo at 19 Sunset Lane had used more than 50,000 gallons a month from January 2007––the earliest records obtained in a countywide request of all municipal and county water usage records––to March 17, 2008. Her usage cut down to 11,000 gallons per month from March through May 16. LAKE PLACID — All 2,000 customers of the Town of Lake Placid Water System were mailed a "Drinking Water Warning" on Monday, but according to the notice and Gary Freeman, director of utilities, the town's drinking water is safe. Freeman told the town council at Monday's meeting that he failed to submit lead and copper sample results from June through September 2007, in time to meet an Oct. 10 deadline. ...more

SEBRING — The Florida Department of Environmental Protection plans to open a Highlands County office early next year. The space at 2812 Kenilworth Blvd., the former Christians in Action Center, has already been leased, said spokesman Elijah Fleishauer. The office will be open in January or February. Seven people, including clerks and specialists, will be hired or moved to Sebring, Fleishauer said. Specialists will work in three DEP areas: waste, water and air. "We're working on hiring right now," Fleishauer said. Some positions have already been filled. To fund the Sebring office, the Fort Myers district saved more than 4 percent of its budget last year, and didn't fill positions in that office. ...more

SEBRING — The 2007 rainy season, which ends in November, didn't alleviate the ongoing water shortage, so South Florida Water Management District's staff recommended last week that its governing board increase watering restrictions at the Dec. 13 monthly meeting.
