SEBRING –– There's nothing like being in the heat of competition on the golf course, especially when its in your back yard. Six ladies from the Highlands County (Jessica Williams, Melissa Doorlag, Gail Brown, Nela Hodge and Nan Reno all from Sebring and Jacqueline Hartzell of Lake Placid) competed in the 53rd annual Harder Hall Women's Invitational, which ended on Sunday. The history and the level of talent at the prestigious event has drawn the local girls to the event year after year. "This is my third year in the event," Williams said. "I sometimes am a fan on the course watching some of these ladies play. I always pick up little tricks when I'm out there I can use in my own game." Williams, along with Doorlag , has been playing with the championship flighted competition, while Brown, Hodge, Reno and Hartzell have been teeing it up in the Ben Roman division. ...more

SEBRING — Brisk winds and less-than-ideal playing conditions didn't dampen Taylore Karle's game — it seemed to give it extra pop. The Pepperdine University freshman — who is rated the No. 1 college freshman in the nation by Golf World Magazine — shot an tournament-low 66 on day two of the 53rd annual Harder Hall Women's Invitational on Friday, good enough for a four-shot lead (75-66-141) over 2006 champion Stacy Lewis and Alison Walshe heading into the weekend. ...more

AVON PARK –– Sheila Chiarandini found a great way to cap off an outstanding year of golf. Chiarandini made a par on the first hole of a playoff to edge Bonnie Lennox to win the Highlands County Women's Amateur on Sunday at Highlands Ridge North. During the course of the year, Chiarandini won the Highlands Ridge Ladies Golf Association match-play event, the women's club championship, her club championship in Canada, as well as a senior district tournament. "This win means an awful lot," Chiarandini said. "This ends my perfect year of golf. "I wasn't even going to sign up to play in the tournament, but Melissa Doorlag talked me into it.
