SEBRING –– Gurney Masters looked out across Firemen's Field and saw plenty of familiar faces –– wearing both red and white jerseys. "I know them a little bit," said the Frostproof boys soccer coach, whose grandson, Buck Schroeder, is a sophomore for Sebring. "I've probably coached half of Sebring's team at one time or another in the YMCA league. "But knowing them and beating them are two different things." AVON PARK –– Some people dream of sailing off into the sunset upon retirement, but only a few actually try it. Bill Stephenson spent 40 years in Vermont with his own agency as a manufacturer's representative selling agricultural and industrial machinery. His wife Mildred, affectionately known as Midge, had been his office manager. Upon retirement in 1995, they set sail. While on the Intracoastal, they lost an engine in Cocoa Beach. Some friends owned property at Lily Lake in Frostproof and invited them to stay there while their boat was being repaired that summer. LAKE PLACID — A new beginning. The Lake Placid girls soccer team opens the season with a road match against rival Sebring at 7:30 tonight at Firemen's Field. The Green Dragons will be at a slight disadvantage since some of their players are still involved in other sports, and the Blue Streaks already have a match under their belts. Lake Placid had a strong season last year and made it to the Class 3A-District 8 semifinal. ...more

LAKE PLACID –– After rallying for an exciting come-from-behind win against Frostproof in last Thursday's Class 3A-District 10 championship, the Lake Placid volleyball team hopes to keep the good times rolling against John Carroll (Fort Pierce) in tonight's regional quarterfinal. The district championship win improved the Green Dragons to an impressive 16-3 overall, and they're brimming with confidence heading into tonight's tilt with the Golden Rams. LAKE PLACID –– Defending the Class 3A-District 10 championship has been a motivating factor all season for the Lake Placid High School volleyball team. After rolling through the regular season with an impressive 14-3 overall record, including 6-0 in district play, the No. 1 seeded Green Dragons begin defense of their title tonight with a home match against No. 4 seed Mulberry. A win against the Panthers moves Lake Placid into Thursday night's district final against the winner of tonight's other semifinal between No. 2 seed Frostproof and third-seed McKeel Academy.
