Going green earned Westchase Elementary $5,000 and a chance at a bigger prize. The school was named one of 10 finalists nationally this week in All laundry detergent's "Go Green and Small with All" contest. Students made changes at home and school and filled out "Eco Report Cards" online and also submitted personal stories and photos. More than 3,000 schools participated. Westchase was the only Florida school to become a finalist. It will learn later this month if it will win the grand prize of $50,000 for eco-friendly improvements to the campus, iPod shuffles for all students and a chance to be featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Westchase celebrated its achievement at an assembly on Friday, where each student wore a green T-shirt and chanted "go green." SEBRING — The school board workshop scheduled for Tuesday to discuss the issue of an appointed versus an elected superintendent of schools has been canceled. Florida School Boards Association Executive Director Wayne Blanton, who was to provide the background on the issue, had a scheduling conflict prompting the cancellation. A new workshop date has yet to be determined. A citizen request initiated the school board's interest in reviewing the pros and cons of the two methods of filling the top position in the school district. Currently the superintendent is elected by the county's voters to a four-year term. ...more
