SEBRING — The Highlands County Sheriff's Office, along with other law enforcement agencies in the county and the state, will be warning and ticketing motorists who break the the Move Over Law. The week-long enforcement is scheduled for June 23 through June 29, Sheriff Susan Benton announced in a press release. SEBRING — In the old days, which were only a few weeks ago, a Highlands County deputy would cite drivers for speeding in his ticket book. The driver was handed a carbonless copy, and the original went to the sheriff's office, where it was transferred to the county clerk of courts and to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. It's always tragic when a life is lost on the roads but nothing beats the loss when a teen dies during a road crash. This year so far, teenage road fatalities in Highlands County have gone up compared to last year. These grim statistics should put us all on red alert and ensure the statistic does not repeat itself next year. From Jan. 1 through the end of September, there were three teen fatalities in the county, including that of an 18-year-old, according the Florida Highway Patrol's Arcadia office. ...more
