The nastier this recession gets, the more people will talk about the discrediting of markets and the failure of deregulation. So the next time the Dow dives off a cliff, splash your face with ice water and remember two things: This end-of-capitalism talk is bunk, and it distracts us from the debate we should be having. ...more

All my friends from "not-Florida" are gushing about their cozy fall dishes, how it's time to break out the Dutch oven and that, finally, they can start wearing boots. And I'm just here, lounging in my swimsuit, sipping iced tea, toes dangling a $3 flip-flop and beaming from ear to ear, gently shaking my head. ...more

To be comfortable is to be "in a state of tranquil enjoyment and content; free from pain and trouble; at ease," the Oxford English Dictionary says. It's hard to think of a less appropriate description of the situation at Merrill Lynch & Co. after the bank's latest pirouette. ...more

The Republican presidential candidates sing from the same book, but if you listen to each of them on individual issues, they flip-flop depending on their audience. On the war in Iraq, with one exception, they agree on continuing the war until we have victory. Their timetable is several years to eternity. The Middle East is in shambles. All agree on making the tax cuts for the wealthy permanent. As for the corporate tax cuts, they also agree we should let them have more money to create jobs (lower wage jobs.) The number of people in our country who live in poverty has grown during this administration. Corporate America has moved jobs to India and they buy products they sell to us from China that have also caused many problems in recalls. ...more
