Joey Galloway wasn't in the lineup Sunday; he was one of the many regulars who got the day off. Four plays into the game, on a first-and-10 from the Carolina 43, the Bucs sent Galloway's replacement, Chad Lucas, deep down the right sideline on a go route. As he often did during the exhibition season, Lucas found an opening in the defense. He had to slow down and come back a bit for Luke McCown's throw, but he caught the ball at the 5-yard line for a 52-yard gain. That set up the Bucs' first score, a touchdown that came three plays later on a 3-yard McCown-to-Jerramy Stevens pass. ...more

Despite taking a sack and committing a penalty that cost them 5 yards, the Bucs needed just five plays to move the ball into the red zone during their second possession of the day. Once they got there, though, the sledding once again got tough for them. A fumbled snap by QB Jeff Garcia on a second-and-goal play from the 3 was the killer. Combined with a broken-up pass on third down, that fumble forced the Bucs to settle for a field goal for the second time in as many possessions. Those two field goals provided the Bucs with a 6-0 lead but they quickly found out that failing to capitalize fully on scoring chances can really hurt you in this league. ...more

Today's conversation is ''Bucs at 49ers,'' and it's as one-sided as, well, Bucs at 49ers. The Bucs left their heart - and their entrails - in San Francisco, with just one win in 10 games. Martin taps Joey's encyclopedic knowledge of all things Bucs on the shoulder.) ...more

Just as he did a week ago in New Orleans, Bucs coach Jon Gruden took an aggressive approach to his play calling Sunday. Faced with a fourth-and-2 from the Texans' 34 just 4:36 into the game, Gruden decided to go for it. He ran Earnest Graham up the middle, but just as defensive end Mario Williams had done one play earlier, safety Will Demps stopped Graham well short of the first down marker. That allowed the Texans to take possession and 12 plays, 66 yards and 6:19 later, they took a 7-0 lead when Sage Rosenfels hit Andre Johnson with a 4-yard TD pass. ...more

Sunday's Best Luke McCown may have been Tampa Bay's third choice behind Jeff Garcia and Bruce Gradkowski most of the season, but he proved to be the best option on the road against New Orleans. McCown completed 29 of 37 passes for 313 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in his first start since 2004 as Tampa Bay pulled off a 27-23 victory to improve its record to 8-4, just about lock up the NFC South and guarantee at least a .500 finish after last season's 4-12 mark. ...more
