The GFWC Tampa Junior Woman's Club Ghostwalk Event on March 20 was a success with more than 75 people attending and $1,800 raised for the TIGER Scholarship. The scholarship - TIGER stands for The Individual Growth in Education Recipient - helps provide continuing education for Tampa Bay area students. It is awarded based on an applicant's high school grades, merit, financial situation and an essay. This year's scholarship applications are being reviewed, and winners will receive checks at a ceremony May 20 at the Woman's Club Clubhouse. Teachers and other schools employees in Pasco County finally have a contract, but the union that represents them doesn't consider the results anything to brag about. Frank Roder, a vice president with United School Employees of Pasco, told the school board today that this was "one of the worst contracts" ever ratified by the employees. Under the agreement, the employees don't get raises this year or even the usual automatic step increases in pay that are awarded based on years of service and, in the case of teachers, education level. ...more
