Mason, 89, is one of the "strutters" who strut their stuff to the music of the Ed Salmon String Band at the Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520, in Hudson. Elks Lodge 2582 will hold its annual New Year's Eve party Monday, Dec. 31, at the Lodge located at 14494 Cortez Blvd. Hors d'oeuvres will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. plus an open bar will be featured from 6 p.m. to closing. Dinner will include a choice of prime rib or Italian chicken with twice baked potato, sugar snap peas, hot rolls and ice cream with cherries jubilee. At midnight, a champagne toast, and coffee and rolls will be offered. The event is semi-formal, and jackets are required. Music for dancing will be provided by Vic Thompkins and his band. The cost is $40 per person; and reservations must be made and paid for by Saturday, Dec. 22. Twenty years ago PDDGER Hal Steffes visited a Masonic Lodge in Michigan and saw what a beautiful program they had for mentally and physically challenged children, young adults, siblings under 10 years of age and their parents. He was so impressed, he brought the idea back to his Elks Lodge, where it has continued for the past two decades. ...more

SEBRING –– Maybe Shaquille O'Neal could arrange to come to the Heartland to take some free throw lessons from the youngsters that participated in Saturday's Sebring Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot competition. The annual event, which continues to grow in popularity, attracted 27 youngsters, ages 8-13, who competed at Sebring Middle School. The winners of each age group advanced to the regional competition, which will be held in Lake Placid in January. Finishing first in the girls 8-9 division was Hanna Reppert and placing second was Ezire Pringle. In the girls 10-11 age group, Micaela Devane came in first, while Rebecca McKenzie placed second and Niesha Brown came in third place. ...more
