AVON PARK — Coaches Lee Elder and Ed Brown are dipping deep into the well of athletes in Avon Park to find the right mix to put on the mat this season of Red Devil wrestling. Undeniable success was reaped during the program's sophomore season, as Avon Park fostered three state qualifiers and have a crop of young, talented wrestlers. "We're in a bit of a rebuilding mode this year," Elder said. "With so many new kids, our success will depend on how quick they learn this sport. We experienced so much success as a program last season in only our second year, last season should be a blueprint for what it takes for a successful wrestling program." ...more

WINTER HAVEN — Celebrations of joy and an almost collective sigh of relief washed over the crowd, as the sun set on the Class 1A-District 5 swimming meet, with many Dragons feeling the thrill of victory. Lake Placid crowned five district champions in the finals at the Rowdy Gaines Pool on Tuesday, as the men's team earned the overall title with 372 points, out scoring the Hardee Wildcats by 16 points, while the girls earned second (381) behind Lakeland Christian (436). "This team has been exceeding expectations all year long," LP head coach Cindy Rivers said. "This is a testament to the hard work that this team really has put in, not only during the season, but in the summer." ...more
