More than 100 youngsters with hearing disabilities received free digital hearing aids Monday, compliments of the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Publix Super Markets Charities. The children were chosen to participate in the giveaway based on the recommendations of local professionals, school districts and special education centers. For five years now I have been taking classes at the Hotel Jacaranda through South Florida Community College. When I first started, the pool was completely enclosed, which made it great for taking classes all year round. Hurricane Charley completely demolished the enclosure and it hasn't been replaced since that time as the college stated that they couldn't afford to replace it. That was four years ago. ...more

SEBRING — The stables at the Heartland Horses and Handicapped barn are finally full again. Gentle Ben, a black and white Tennessee walker saddle horse, has joined the ranks thanks to a $1,400 donation from Highlands Club Rotary. Heartland Horses and Handicapped provides therapeutic horsemanship for riders with disabilities. Joy Ongley, stable manager for Heartland Horses and Handicapped, said Gentle Ben makes a great addition to the riding team. "He is a very good horse, and he needed almost no training," Ongley said. "Just like his name implies, he is very gentle and patient, which is perfect for our riders." ...more
