The Pasco County Public Transportation system is facing an interesting dilemma. Just when rising gasoline prices might be tempting some to park their private vehicles and climb aboard a bus, PCPT officials are seeking County Commission approval for 100 percent fare increases for the county's fixed-route bus system and paratransit service for people with disabilities. PCPT, not surprisingly, is not immune from rising energy costs. ...more

Should Highlands County have an elected or appointed superintendent? We don't really know. There's compelling arguments for and against both systems. For the last many years, we did fine with an elected superintendent. Then one day, somebody raised the idea of appointing the school superintendent instead, and suddenly the whole subject's become a talked-about issue. But if the system is not broken, should one fix it? ...more

Whether this letter be in response to those recently expressing consternation of our federal government or to those who may simply question the direction of Highlands County's elected officials, my message remains the same. The familiar phrase, "Of the people, by the people, for the people" means a great deal to me. In my opinion and quite simply put, "Of the people" signifies that we, the citizens, have given or allowed our government certain powers, which also means that we may restrict them as well. "By the people" then gives us the authority to decide those who will serve in elected positions. "For the people," as I read it, implies that those elected are charged with the responsibility to recognize each person's circumstance and to make proper and just decisions accordingly. This is not an enviable position to be in, for sure. In my life, I've found there are times when doing the right thing is not necessarily popular. Equally, I've come to understand that what's popular is not always right. ...more

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been going round and round about nursing homes. My father's illness and memory loss have brought us face to face with the issue. This dilemma is not for those families who can afford to pay for someone to care for a patient in his or her own home. Nor does it apply to those who can afford an assisted-living facility. ...more

I was on a bus trip in mid- November as a guest of the Red Hatter's club. It was a very pleasant day with upbeat, friendly and cheerful people. It is a great way to begin any journey. We traveled to the Vero Beach Mall for an afternoon of shopping. We all stopped at a restroom, where I washed my hands. I said to my friends: "Did you hear that? I just heard a clink." I immediately felt this sick sensation in my stomach. I quickly checked my hands. I thought that I had lost my wedding ring. But it was not until we had returned to the bus that I realized I'd lost my mom's "Eastern Star" pinkie ring, a precious gift to me. I sat there stunned. What to do? What a loss! I was encouraged by many to call the mall management office and explain my dilemma. I did just that. When the bus ride was over, many said "I'll say a prayer that you'll recover your Mom's ring," Others joined in: "I'll pray to St. Anthony for you," "Prayers can only help," I said to myself. ...more
