It wasn't readily apparent in the first two games of the Citrus Series that the most prolific home run-hitting team in baseball was visiting Tropicana Field. Florida went consecutive games without a long ball for the first time this season Friday and Saturday and, probably not coincidentally, the Rays notched a couple of wins. ...more

SEBRING — Taking advantage of your opponents' mistakes is the mark of a winning team. Sebring used a pair of DeSoto errors to turn a tight game into a rout with a 10-run second inning, and senior center fielder Kyle Long had four RBI to lead the Blue Streaks to a 13-1 victory over DeSoto in a Class 4A-District 10 contest on Friday night at Firemen's Field. Senior Adam Simmons picked up the win by allowing just one hit to go with six strikeouts in five innings in a game that was called because of the 10-run mercy rule. SEBRING –– Lightning in a bottle was what the 2007 Sebring High School baseball team was if you ask Blue Streaks head coach Hoppy Rewis. "We had an amazing ride," Rewis said. "That was a great group of kids. We had to run them out of the batting cages. They played with no fear and was the definition of a team. They never gave up, which was evident in that they scored a ton of runs with two outs." Last year, the Streaks rode the crest of a wave that saw the team defeat defending regional champion Tampa Jesuit 4-2 to reach the state semifinals for the first time since 1966. "I remember going crazy when we beat [Jesuit]," Sebring first baseman Tony Vazquez said. "Last year, we had a team full of all-stars and we played hard until the final out. It's an experience I'll never forget." ...more

AVON PARK — A steady diet of curveballs was on the menu for Avon Park, and Sebring pitcher Adam Simmons was serving up hearty portions. The Streaks pitcher force-fed the Red Devils all the breaking balls they could handle while hurling a gem — one hit and 10 strike outs — to lead the Sebring baseball team to a 6-1 victory on the final day of the Bill Jarrett Early Bird Tournament at Head Field on Friday. "My curveball was the difference tonight," Simmons said while getting his arm wrapped with ice after the game. "The curve helped me set up my fastball to keep them off balance." ...more
