Why aren't cities and counties screaming, hollering and lobbying against Amendment One, an amendment which if passed would severely cut its revenue? Is it because they are afraid to take on the state? Perhaps they believe they can easily operate with less money? Or maybe they think they have no credibility with the voters? Doubtful on all counts. The most logical conclusion is that if Amendment One passes, local governments will continue to get the revenue they need to provide the services we are used to and demand. ...more

I read with interest the op-ed in the Jan. 12 edition of Highlands Today, on whether evolution should be debated in science classes. It was attributed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. What the author apparently meant was that evolution should be accepted as proven fact, and that no other theory should be considered. I am sick of the argument that, "Evolution is science and creation and intelligent design are not, so don't debate them in science class!" ...more

Without appearing to be sacrilegious to you women, I believe that Oprah Winfrey's credibility has taken a significant hit. She is all gung ho for Barack Obama, presumably because he is black. Certainly he has little in the way of experience or the qualities which we need to lead our country. Here is a man who refuses to salute our flag, nor honor our national anthem, yet he has the gall to ask us to elect him as our president. The sad truth is that many unthinking and misguided Americans would probably vote for him, given the chance. My question is, why? Born a Muslin and still a Muslim, he could only bring disharmony to our country, and we have had only too much of that already. ...more
