Free Seminar Planned On Starting Small Business SEBRING — The Small Business Development Center of the Heartland will present a free seminar titled "Steps To Start A Small Business." It will be held Wednesday, May 28 at the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, 227 U.S. 27 N., in Sebring from 2 to 4 p.m. The seminar will be taught by Bill McKown, certified business analyst with the SBDC. It is designed for persons thinking of starting a small business, or who have started a business, and want to make sure they did it correctly. SEBRING — Highlands County's most decorated war hero received another post-mortem honor this week. On the Island of Negros in the Philippines, a large memorial marker was set on the crash site where the late Maj. Thomas B. McGuire Jr. died in battle. McGuire, a Highlands County native who won the Congressional Medal of Honor as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II, died at that spot 63 years ago while on a mission that turned into a desperate dog fight. ...more

SEBRING — While the person giving the invocation to start the Highlands County Board of Commissioners meetings changes every week, one thing stays constant. Every meeting begins with expressions of gratitude to and prayers for the men and women serving in the military. At Tuesday's meeting, the commissioners will discuss a proposal to provide up to $900 per year in financial aid to military personnel from Highlands County serving in combat zones in the war on terrorism. Highlands County is likely to become the 14th county in the state to offer such aid through an exemption on property taxes or a stipend to help with expenses. ...more

I was so pleased with the turnout for the Make-A-Difference-Day. We raised money for our Highlands County veterans and their families, but you know me, I am so greedy, I just kept asking for "one more dollar." Don't forget, our soldiers are over there for people like you and me, to do all the things we take for granted, like breathing this "free air." SEBRING –– Three commercial buildings are being considered as the new home of Highlands County Veterans Services. County officials are investigating the possibility of buying and renovating one of the three. Two are brand new, including Liberty Plaza, an unoccupied structure for professional services and retail on U.S. 27 at George Boulevard. The other new building is partially occupied. While this option is being checked out, plans to construct a new building for Veterans Services, approved back in May, have temporarily been placed on hold. ...more
