MULBERRY — Mulberry's talented duo of forward Michael Poole and center Travon Sampson combined for 37 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Panther boys basketball team past Lake Placid 55-43 in the Class 3A-District 10 semifinals on Friday night. The Green Dragons used a balanced offense, paced by Marcus Waugh's team-high eight points, and an aggressive defense to stay in the game in the first half. But Mulberry's physical full-court press forced numerous turnovers, which were converted into easy points as the No. 1- seeded Panthers cruised to the easy win to move into the finals against second-seeded Frostproof, which eliminated McKeel Academy 66-25 in Friday's other semifinal. ...more

LAKE PLACID — Playing with effort, intensity and determination — something that's been lacking on a consistent basis during the season — the Lake Placid boys basketball team used a balanced attack led by Conlin Veley's team-high 13 points to beat LaBelle 64-49 on Friday night. Veley also pulled down 12 rebounds, while younger brother Kurt Veley scored nine points on three 3-pointers as the Class 3A Green Dragons improved to 9-11 with the non-district win. "It was a good win for us," Conlin Veley said. "When we play with effort and intensity, we're a pretty good team. We need to play hard every minute, because when we let down we lose our tempo and teams make runs on us. ...more

LAKE PLACID — After coming back from the Christmas break with a disappointing effort in an 18-point loss to Mulberry, the Lake Placid boys basketball team bounced back with a convincing 78-45 win over Moore Haven on Thursday night. Senior forward Conlin Veley led the way with a game-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds as the Class 3A Green Dragons improved to 7-8 on the season. "This was a nice win for us," said Veley. "We played a lot better as a team after not playing very well at Mulberry on Tuesday. We got the ball down the floor, hit some outside shots and didn't make a lot of mental mistakes. "We need to play smart and together because the district race is wide open, and we still have a chance to make this a good season." Lake Placid came out strong in the opening minutes as K.J. Delbert scored four of his 11 points, Marcus Waugh netted four and Veley added nine — including a 3-pointer — as the Green Dragons jumped out to a 17-11 lead heading into the second stanza. ...more
