They're In Denial Gov. Bobby Jindal and U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis and Ginny Brown-Waite just don't seem to get it. The current recession, soon to be the new Great Depression, was caused by Republican policies, and all they can do is carp about attempts to fix their incredible mistakes. SEBRING — When the Florida Association of Community Colleges lobbies in Tallahassee, it has the support of South Florida Community College faculty. SFCC has the second highest percentage of membership in the state in FACC, a group that lobbies for community college legislation in Tallahassee. About 93 percent of SFCC's full-time employees are members of the professional organization that represents the state's 28 community colleges and has more than 8,000 members statewide. Adam Martin, who served as president of SFCC's FACC during 2007, said the local chapter has challenged itself to add seven more members in 2008 and bring its total membership to 200. If the chapter adds 30 members, it will boost the membership to 100 percent. "The college supports FACC, which, in turn, supports the college," Martin said. A story in today's Highlands Today shows an example of local parents doing an extremely smart thing: investing early in their children's college education. We hope all Floridians find someway to save for such expenses. Andrew and Susan Bible made college funding for their four children a priority. They couldn't sink a lot of cash up front into a plan that locks in tuition rates at Florida public universities for their children, ages 3 through 9, but they could do it in installments. For $200 per month, they are putting money away to help ensure a bright future for their children. And if their children go to colleges or universities outside the state, although the tuition won't be locked in, the money still is available. ...more
