I read in the paper about the ethanol plant or possible plants coming to Highlands County. This can be a most wonderful opportunity for the county, state, American citizens, real estate sales, businesses large and small alike. Since our tax dollars are in part funding this program, there should be in no way anyone working either on the building project or in the plant itself not be a United States citizen. Our commissioners, state representative, Congress, Senate and governor should see that our people are ready to take these jobs. ...more

Detectives with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office have confirmed the identity of a victim found inside a burned vehicle Nov. 29 in Hardee County. The victim's name is Dwight Clyde Williams, 46, a citizen of Jamaica. He had been living in Highlands County under the alias Malik Addullah Muhammad at the time of his death, according to a press release. The name was withheld until his identity could be identified. ...more
