A seven-day revival involving 49 St. Petersburg churches started Sunday night with songs, sermons and a mission to "deal with the ills of society" and to "reach out to the lost," according to pastors. AVON PARK - Churches and non-profit groups in the City of Charm will have to fork over more money for their fire protection after the council voted 4-1 to charge them 75 percent of the institutional rate for the city's fire assessment. This means that churches will have to pay 50 percent more to the city's fire department through the annual assessment than it did last year, when they were charged 50 percent of the institutional rate. Homeowners will still pay $165, while commercial and nursing home rates were unchanged. ...more

I had the privilege of serving the people of Highlands County as a state employee with the Department of Children and Families for 14 years. Many times children under my jurisdiction needed the state's help. Often, we could only help them by removing them from their families and placing them in foster care. The New Testament Mission provided an alternative solution. Sometimes it was food, a hot meal, lodging but it never involved a fee. Pastor Karl never charged a dime for the services he rendered to the citizens of Highlands County. We have been blessed in this county to have such a helpful and willing institution. ...more
