A few months ago, we were all up in arms about the price of gas, trying to cut down the number of miles we had to drive. That uproar has died away. Now gas prices are creeping up again. I would like to suggest that the people responsible for new roadways in Highlands County consider establishing a more direct route between Placid Lakes and the Leisure Lakes areas. The present drive between them is around 20 miles by way of Catfish Creek Road-Interlake-Route17-or U.S. 27 and Lake June Road. ...more

LAKE PLACID A Lake Placid man was free on $1,500 bail Friday after he was stopped by Lake Placid Police for a defective brake light and it was discovered the Toyota Camry he was driving was stolen from West Palm Beach. Police also discovered marijuana hidden in a Barbasol shaving cream can with a false bottom, according to the arrest report. David Jonathan Adams, 20, of 1239 County Road 29, was charged with possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and grand theft auto. A rear male passenger seen fidgeting about where the shaving cream can was found was also arrested and charged with possession of marijuana less than 20 grams. LAKE PLACID — The population of the town could double in less than eight years if a proposed development, by local citrus farmer and landowner Alan Grigsby, is successful. The proposal calls for 942 new homes on 375 acres, or an average density of 2.75 dwelling units per acre. Twenty percent of the site will be set aside for commercial development. The tract of mostly farmland is south of West Interlake Boulevard and east of Catfish Creek Road. Rhon Ernest-Jones Consulting Engineers Inc., the project's consultant, expects a "full build-out" by 2015. Any construction depends on the new construction market, Rhon Ernest-Jones said. ...more

A car had veered off Catfish Creek Road and wound up in low, scrub trees. A hot catalytic converter set the grass on fire. "This always happens," he said, shaking his head in an apology.
