SEBRING — The Highlands County Sheriff's Office has received a $42,000 grant for alien inmate assistance from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), which operates through the U.S. Department of Justice. To receive the 2007 State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAPP) award, the sheriff's office had to submit records detailing the number of inmates housed in the county jail from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006. Inmates had to be born outside of the United States or one of its territories, and have no documented claim of U.S. citizenship. Funding was based upon the number of eligible criminal aliens that were housed as inmates for more than four days. ...more
