On Nov. 11 we will be celebrating Veterans Day, a day we honored our men and women who served both in the past and the present. I'm grateful as a combat soldier that people recognize the effort we all did and continue doing today. Thanks for your prayers. But I would also like to take a moment to thank our men and women in uniform serving in Highlands County: police, sheriff, firefighters, national guard, EMT, state troopers and many others. I read about one of our county's finest police officers, Adam Willis, who confronted a defiant drunk, who had intentions of hurting this officer in order to get away, but had little success (great response by both police and sheriff officers who arrived at the scene immediately for back-up.) ...more

On Thursday, Aug. 28 I read the article about the Arizona sheriff. I believe this man is right on target. He has saved the taxpayers a lot of money and made the criminals understand they are not in a recreation facility. It should make them think about breaking the law again in his county. ...more

Coming from a family with a very long history in law enforcement, I find it very hard to understand why Chief Tom Dettman would expect his son to receive any type of special treatment when he is breaking the law. I have parents, siblings, uncles and cousins that were and are in law enforcement. Never once did I, nor my family, expect special treatment when I was in the wrong! I've been pulled over for speeding or "coasting" through a stop sign and because of who my family are, has gotten me out of it but, I have also received tickets for these things. I'm older now and a lot more responsible when it comes to my driving habits. I never once went to my family and asked them to take care of it. I also have never thrown in anyone's face as to who my family is. My parents would have never allowed it. ...more
