Connor Bauer ran to a second-place finish and the Sebring boys and girls cross country teams qualified for regionals together for the first time in more than five years on Thursday at the Class 2A-District 5 meet at Lake Park. The Sebring boys finished sixth with 157 points, while the Blue Streak girls finished fifth with 144 points to send both teams to the Region 3 race on Nov. 14 at Estero Community Park. ...more

SEBRING –– Yearning to be the best has been a trait that's woven into the fabric of who Sebring sophomore Connor Bauer is as an athlete. His training schedule as a distance runner showed his dedication to the sport and crossing the finish line on top is all that was on Bauer's mind. But that tunnel vision led him down a dark corridor that saw him push the boundaries of what is considered too much and could have cost him much more than just sweat. "I never thought I could work out too much," Bauer said. "I always thought that you could get a pulled muscle or break a bone, but not sitting in a hospital wondering if you'd done permanent damage to yourself." Bauer, who was preparing for the Class 3A-District 8 track meet, where he was one of the favorites in the mile and two-mile runs, began feeling more intense muscle pain a few days after a heavy workout. ...more

WINTER HAVEN — A day before Thanksgiving usually means gearing up for the big feast for most, but for the Avon Park wrestling team, it meant getting down on the mat. DADE CITY — Connor Bauer said he felt "horrible" heading into Saturday's Class 2A state cross-country meet. As the lone member of the Sebring XC team competing at the event, the sophomore said it was tough for him to get excited about his first state race without his teammates at his side. Oh, what a difference less than 17 minutes makes. Bauer finished 25th in the final race of the season, burning up a slow, hilly Little Everglades Ranch course with a time of 16:58, his second-best mark of the year. ...more
