SEBRING — Bubba Latimer and the Bub-ba-Q team from Jasper, Ga. is the Grand Champion at the 12th Central Florida BBQ Festival. Latimer was ecstatic after his team beat competitors from all over the Southeast in the weekend-long barbecue festival, also called the "Pig Fest." He has been competitively barbecuing for only the past year and a half. He already knew where his prize was going when another competitor suggested mounting his trophy wooden pig statue. ...more

SEBRING — Jason Gray was bragging on his fellow barbecuers Saturday afternoon. There was a fire in his Dominizer, a water chamber cooker. The grease pan ignited, and two flashovers flamed across the 6.5 foot high ceiling. It was moving too quickly to wait for the fire department. The entire trailer would have been involved, and the neighboring trailers would have been endangered too. Gray, a burly caterer from Wauchula who supplies weddings and small gatherings, shouted for help twice, and within seconds two fire extinguishers appeared on the serving counter of his 24-foot trailer. SEBRING — Smells of barbeque will be wafting through the air this weekend at Fireman's Field as cooks fire up their grills for the annual Central Florida Barbecue Festival. "If you drive by here with your windows down, the smell is enough to make your mouth water," said Skip Adams, co-chair of the barbecue festival. "The smell alone will be enough to draw you in." About 40 teams will set up tents and grills at Firemen's Field for the competition, with the main contests Saturday in ribs, chicken, brisket and pulled pork. ...more
