It seems to me that Barbara Stewart and Jeff Carlson are still vindictive and vengeful in spirit against the Highlands County Sheriff and her department. Reading in the paper today of the vote they cast, I just wonder if they did they get a raise? Did they refuse it or give it to a needy cause? ...more

Highlands County Commissioner Barbara Stewart and Sheriff Susan Benton are in the middle of a controversy that has everyone talking. Depending on whom you support, trying to figure out who is to blame is next to impossible. For people who don't have a point of view either way for either woman, both of these high-ranking public officials deserve blame for this even becoming a issue. ...more

Sebring Police released the statement on Wednesday that Commissioner Barbara Stewart typed and had notarized after she got into an argument Sept. 16 with Sheriff Susan Benton. According to Stewart, she was in her automobile and backing out when Benton's personal vehicle pulled behind her. "Thus, this auto prevented me from backing out of my space." ...more

SEBRING — The so-called, and proud of it, "tree huggers" went for a win Tuesday at the Highlands County Board of Commissioners but came away with a tie, and the day for a decision on their proposed tax issue was pushed back for at least three weeks. The commissioners appeared close to voting to endorse the concept of putting a two/tenths of one mill, 20-year bond issue on the November ballot to raise more than $1 million a year to buy and preserve conservation lands before they are paved over. Commissioners were asked to endorse the idea and then, in the coming weeks, get all the details and research nailed down so that they could make a final decision about putting the issue on the ballot in July. ...more

To the readers and voters of Highlands County: There has been much attention from politicians and the good ole boys recently, regarding the 33 misplaced items within the sheriff's office. Well, my concern is for the 33 percent of our young veterans coming home, either dead or diseased from Iraq; the billions of dollars misspent, no sufficient armor, no safe drinking water, missing uranium, plutonium, weapons and computers. ...more

SEBRING — Is Carl Cool thinking of challenging Barbara Stewart for county commissioner in District 1? He won't confirm the news tip, but asked three times on Thursday, he didn't deny it. "There are lots of rumors going around regarding people running for offices at this time of year, and all of them are unconfirmed at this time." But what about Cool? "I've not only heard that I was running, I've heard rumors about other people who might be running, and they are all unconfirmed as far as I know," Cool said. ...more
