Bad idea Editor: As one of only two people who spoke out against the proposed renewal of New Port Richey's "alcoholic beverages in the park" ordinance at the Oct. 20 City Council meeting, I was dismayed, but not surprised, that council is moving forward with extending, and perhaps expanding, this controversial ordinance. I have been an active and vocal opponent of this issue for many years and am saddened that the vast majority of residents, 69 percent, who voted against this idea several years ago, have been totally forgotten. ...more

The new law concerning buckling up is long overdue. A seat belt probably kept me from being seriously hurt in a wreck once. But requiring us to buckle up while permitting us to text message does not make much sense. ...more

Stop the government takeover of health care. I think we can all agree that the system needs some serious reforms. The 2009 regular session of the Florida Legislature is under way. The issue dominating the proceedings is the dwindling state government revenue stream. According to current estimates, planned spending for the state's 2010 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, will have to be cut by $5 billion. If not, there would be a budget deficit, which the state constitution bans. The Legislature could reduce the future red ink potential by asking the Florida voters to do away with the class size amendment to the state constitution they approved in 2002. Unfortunately, lawmakers may only delay class-size compliance a year and ask voters to approve a change in the way compliance is determined next year. ...more
