Why is it that when filling my gas tank in Highlands County my gas mileage drops 2 to 4 mpg? I have a relatively new 2007 automobile and while in Michigan I was getting 20-21 mpg in town and about 22 mpg highway. En-route to Florida, my mileage was as high as 24.4 mpg (loaded down). Immediately after arriving in Sebring my first fill up I got 18 mpg. We recently drove to Sarasota, filling the tank just prior to leaving, filling up in Sarasota we got 23.4 mpg which included some in-town driving. I'm not prone to writing letters to the editor, unless I see or read something in the paper that really "cheeses me off." What has gotten my "knickers in a twist" this time is not something from the paper, but what our "County Mounties" are doing. Don't get me wrong, I highly respect our sheriff's deputies, it's what some of them have been doing by parking in a handicap spot that is upsetting. Once a week I have my hair done at a beauty salon on North Main Street in Lake Placid. Having a legitimate handicap sticker, it is most helpful for me to be able to park in a handicap zone. ...more

Regarding 'Buses Gain 5 Minutes' (Metro, Oct. 6): Several months ago I purchased an automobile navigating system commonly called a GPS. I was amazed how detailed the verbal instructions were after I put an address or a street intersection location in the unit. ...more
