I'm writing to the ATV riders who deliberately ran into and drove on my auto, parked at the Highlands Preserve on Feb. 16. Your thoughtless "fun" will cost me $1,500 to repair; but it will also add to the growing list of ATV problems and complaints in Highlands County. The recent ATV fatality, along with problems at Arbuckle Creek, and your actions, will ban or limit county ATV riding for responsible operators and fools like you. Sometimes, a fence helps –– and helps a lot. For all those who thought no fence could keep overzealous all-terrain vehicle riders away from the Carter Creek Scrub area, there is some good news. The gates to the Carter Creek fence, installed to keep ATVs out, have not been installed yet, but Riverdale Road and surrounding areas have been a lot more quieter with the fence nearly completed, authorities say. There are believed to be few ATVs in the area in recent weeks, or at least authorities have received much fewer complaints. ...more

We hope Highlands County residents step up and take part in a survey coming next year about what they want for recreational activities in the county. This is important information, and whatever's gleaned will be used for future projects. Merritt O'Brien, chairman of the county's Recreation and Parks Advisory Board, said the 13-member board will use public response to consider recreational opportunities for area residents. Past surveys showed a need for more and better soccer facilities, as well as softball fields. We have both in the recently opened complex near Sebring High School. Perhaps hiking or biking trails are wanted. Or maybe more nice public parks and recreational areas are needed on local lakes. We all know the recent debate centering around ATV riders and their lack of a place to call their own. Whatever the needs, the board will consider it. ...more
