St. Augustine — The South Florida Community College softball team opened the season by competing in the Triple Crown Tournament over the weekend. The Panthers went 1-4 in their five games losing on Friday to Coastal Georgia 5-2. On Saturday, SFCC split a pair of games, losing to Florida Community College of Jacksonville 8-0, but the Panthers bounced back to defeat St. Johns 2-1. SFCC's Lindsey Andree picked up the win on the mound. "We looked nervous and didn't make plays that we normally make," said SFCC coach Carlos Falla. "We had some kids play well and we had some that didn't play up to their potential. AVON PARK –– After qualifying for the state tournament the last two years, the South Florida Community College softball team has one goal –– a return trip. The Panthers went 35-26 last year and made it to the state junior college semifinals before losing to nemesis Gulf Coast Community College. Despite returning only five starters, SFCC coach Carlos Falla is optimistic this year's squad can come together to make another trip to state a reality. ...more

AVON PARK – Throw out the stat book, and forget the R's, H's and E's. Fourth-year South Florida Community College softball coach Carlos Falla is taking his team to softball school, and so far, most of his girls are earning straight A's. "We're not really looking at stats, because at this point, those numbers can be misleading," Falla said. "So we're basically doing a scorecard for each girl, grading them and seeing who's consistent. They get a grade for each day, and when we're done with the fall, we'll sit down and go through all those sheets." The Panthers were perfect pupils this past weekend, pulling off a sweep of the Sarasota Heat traveling team, 4-2 and 8-1. Freshman outfielder Cassidy Faircloth had two doubles on the afternoon, freshman infielder Megan Randolph added two more hits, and freshman Lora Helton and sophomore Kayla Finney each stole two bases on a windy afternoon at Panther Field to lead SFCC, which now boasts an 8-1 fall record. ...more
