One of the most-read stories last week at TBO.com also drew a flurry of comments. The Sons of Confederate Veterans erected a 30-by-50-foot Confederate flag at the junction of Interstate 75 and U.S. 92 in Eureka Springs on June 3. Black county residents, for whom the flag represents slavery and racism, vowed it would come down. After discovering they have no legal means to prohibit the flag, county commissioners pleaded with the Sons group to voluntarily not fly it and avoid fracturing the community along racial lines. The flag was down as of Monday. Readers at TBO.com shared their opinions on the controversy. Here are some excerpts. I only wish I were experiencing a similar percentage drop in wages-revenue as compared to the losses the county and our government is experiencing. Perhaps my losses are attributed to the decline in construction as well as the real estate market or is it the expensive fuel and rising grocery bill? I may also be over taxed with the real estate since you are hard pressed to sell it even at appraised value. Real estate used to be an asset, now it is a trap. Whatever the driving force is behind the ailing economy, the government has not even come close to feeling the crunch that the small business owners and labor force are enduring. I wonder what the future holds and what the economic gurus will label this economic era. ...more

Illegal immigration is a very hotly debated subject in this county. Most people have very definite ideas on how it should be handled. I would like to know, though, what makes you think that "Racists have grabbed hold of this idea?" I have heard lots of arguments on all sides and have not thought any of them "racist." It has been my experience that the race card is played by those who cannot give a convincing argument on behalf of their opinion so they shout racism! ...more

In Tuesday May 13's paper on the front page, Jim Konkoly published a very good article titled "Mahoney Outlines Plan To End Recession." The article went on to tell of the talk Mr. Mahoney gave at the homeowners meeting on May 12. At the end of the article he talked about some of the questions that were asked and the answers that Mr. Mahoney gave. A good bit of the Mahoney plan to end the recession was based on putting the people to work in the construction industry. The first question that was asked in the question and answer session was, "How would he keep illegal aliens from taking construction jobs on public infrastructure projects aimed at putting American citizens back to work." The answer given was "We can get this problem fixed, but it cannot be a campaign issue." He said "It's not rocket science, you just have to have the will to do it." ...more
