The new year of 2009 is here. Last year at Manna saw a substantial increase in the number of families served, a new director and physical building changes. The one obvious fact that we are still open means that God is still blessing us. He blesses us through our wonderful donors. You have given generously of food, clothing, household goods and funds. I would like to say thank you. There have been many sad, wonderful and amazing things happen at Manna this year. Some I have shared with you, others God knows about. Recently I had a lady come in asking for help. Her husband's unemployment had run out, she had been laid off from her job and the prospects of Christmas for her three children were slim. She came to us too late for the Toy Store at the church, all the toys were gone. ...more

Every senior citizen is a library filled with priceless information. Most don't talk about their lives, unless asked. We've learned amazing things by asking and listening. Such is the case with our friend, Lillian Anderson. She's had a most interesting life. We were privileged to spend some time with her recently. The collection of photos on her apartment walls piqued our curiosity. We asked. The tall, attractive lady needed some encouragement. We began by pointing to the professional shot of a pretty young woman ice-skating. Was it of her? It was. She said she'd only taken two ice-skating lessons when Bob Linden, a talent scout for Sonja Henie's Ice Show, discovered her in her hometown in California. He told her she couldn't skate too well, but she looked great and they needed her to go to New York. She went and started her skating career as the straight lady for comedian and juggler, Joe Cook. We got the information out of her that they called her "the glamour girl." ...more

Twin Lakes Elementary's fourth principal in five years hopes to stick around a while. Edith Lefler said she was excited about working with Twin Lakes' parents and students and getting involved in the school's innovative activities, such as its professional development for teachers. "They have such amazing things going on," Lefler said. "It's the type of school I'd love to lead." The Hillsborough County school board appointed her as principal Tuesday night, replacing Holly Saia, who was transferred to Shaw Elementary. Lefler, 36, comes from Town and Country Elementary, where she has served as assistant principal for elementary instruction. "I know the Town and Country family will sorely miss you, but you'll be a welcome addition to the Twin Lakes family," said school board member Susan Valdes. ...more
