"People would come from places like Lake Wales to shop at the mall not realizing that 'mall' has different meanings," long time resident Larry Albritton told a group gathered at the Avon Park Historic Museum last Sunday. Avon Park's "Mile Long Mall" is the kind that is defined as "a public area often set with shade trees." Not the kind designed for shoppers. Although Larry did say that when he moved over from Wauchula back in 1958 the city had three department stores operating along the mall. SEBRING – A Sebring man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $38,000 bond Monday after sheriff's deputies say he ran from the Florida Highway Patrol early Sunday, injured a deputy putting down spike strips, and was fired upon by a pursuing deputy. Timothy Allen Amann, 48, of 1126 Josephine Court, was booked on charges of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, fleeing attempting to elude a law enforcement officer with disregard to the safety of persons or property, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence, driving with a suspended driver's license, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) and refusal to submit to a DUI test. ...more
