Chargers TE Antonio Gates vs. Patriots SS Rodney Harrison Even with a painful toe injury, Gates represents a difficult assignment for Harrison, one of the hardest hitters in the game. Harrison has a nose for the football and arrives in an ill mood, but at age 35, he doesn't have the wheels to keep up with Gates. Indy TE Dallas Clark burned the Chargers last week for six catches for 95 yards, including a 25-yard scoring reception. If Gates isn't severely hampered, Harrison will need substantial help. ...more

SEBRING — Renovations to Sebring Fire Department's Central Station were supposed to be completed by now, but the major work hasn't even started yet. The $500,000 project, which started in February, originally was slated for a December 2007 completion, but now city officials said a more realistic target is summer 2008. The project to renovate the historic station, located at 301 N. Mango St., will soon be rebid for a third time. The first bids were rejected because the fire department staff had not had adequate time to review the specifics of the project before the project was bid. "They had a lot of input about changes they wanted to see, and we didn't have time to include that in the original bids," City Administrator Bob Hoffman said. "We asked city council to reject those bids so that their suggestions could be included." ...more

AVON PARK — Tears of joy and sorrow mixed with laughter and joyous ovations, as the legacy of Earnest Perkins filled the APHS auditorium, and supporters young and old paid tribute to the former Avon Park football coach. "This was a very sentimental night for all of us," said Red Devil senior captain Fred Mixon Jr. "It hasn't really hit me yet that he isn't the coach anymore, even though I'm graduating. He was more than a coach to all of his players. "I'm blessed that I was a part of this and belong to the last Circle of Honor." ...more
