The caring and generosity of the dart throwers and golfers in Highlands County is well known. That point was driven home once again in Saturday's annual Toys For Tots golf tournament. The popular one-day, 18-hole tournament attracted a field of 43 golfers, who competed in a four-person scramble format over the tight and demanding 6,450-yard, par 72 Golf Hammock Country Club layout. ...more

OKEECHOBEE — Cody Cook could hear his coach yelling for him to run home, but with the game on the line, Cook didn't immediately respond to the order being given. "I just stood there a moment and then finally got what was happening," Cook said. "And I took off." What could've been a blunder wound up being the game-winner for Cook, who crossed home plate on a fluke play involving Justin Acevedo and a miscue by Okeechobee in the Sebring All-Stars' 1-0, eight-inning victory in the opening round of the Dixie Junior Boys (age 13) District 8 tournament at Okeechobee Recreational Complex on Friday. ...more

SEBRING –– After trailing late and getting a scare in Saturday's 12-4 win over Lake Placid in the Dixie AAA District 8 tournament, Sebring made sure that didn't happen against Avon Park on Sunday. The boys in blue and white pounded out 10 hits en route to a 17-3 win over Avon Park at Max Long Recreational Complex. The win kept Sebring unbeaten in the six-team, double-elimination tournament, while the loss eliminated Avon Park. "Our pitching has been awesome the entire tournament and our bats are coming alive," said Sebring head coach Bobby Cannon. "We're hitting the ball hard and having fun and we're in a great position." The Sebring victory set up a game on Monday night against once-beaten Okeechobee American, which eliminated Lake Placid 11-0 on Sunday afternoon. ...more

SEBRING –– After losing only one game during the regular season, Publix proved that wasn't a fluke, as its offense pounded out 10 hits and Tommy Bertoniere and Seth Abeln combined on a three-hitter to lead Publix to 12-2 win over Goin' Postal in Sunday's Dixie Boys (ages 13-14) city tournament championship game. Publix breezed through the double-elimination tournament to cap a remarkable turnaround from last year. "Winning this championship means quite a bit," said Publix coach Shon Abeln. "We struggled last year with a young team, but the experience they got from playing was just what they needed. "We only lost one game this season and that probably helped us get ready for the tournament, because it showed we could get beat if we didn't come ready to play. "I'm proud of all the kids and it was a great way to end the season." ...more
