While there is a role for the U.S. Congress in big and small matters that concern Americans, most of us are tired of hearing about Major League Baseball's steroid case and the New England Patriot's videotape scandal. For some reason, though, the nation's most important business has been put on hold for hearings and questioning. Sometimes Congress is all we have to hold people accountable, so we don't dismiss their power to call people on the carpet. Sometimes these matters are relatively small. But the Roger Clemens steroid accusations is not a matter that should have members of Congress locked up for days hearing testimony. It serves no purpose. It seems like some members of Congress enjoy the face time they get on these frivolous hearings. They want to fight for the best sound bite, or to see who can best insult someone being questioned. It's one thing when it was tobacco executives sitting there lying to the country about the dangers of their products, and quite another when a baseball pitcher and his trainer are lying about each other. ...more

The founder and operator of the controversial Horseshoe Creek Wildlife Sanctuary is in trouble again. Darryl Atkinson, 51, of Davenport, was arrested Friday on fraud charges. An undercover state wildlife officer, posing as someone who needed to work off community service hours, went to the sanctuary and asked Atkinson for work, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. ...more

What Has County Come To? So, the witch hunt actually begins. Interim County Administrator Larry Jennings has suspended 10-year veteran Human Resources Director Barbara Dupre for five days without pay for making "unsubstantiated accusations" against Diane Rowden. Unsubstantiated. Not disproved. I thought we had freedom of speech in this country? We may never find out who truly is responsible for breaking into Barbara's office, but I bet Jay Rowden could shed some light on this. Barbara Dupre can no longer participate in the selection of our next county administrator, just as Diane Rowden wanted in the first place. Isn't it strange how that worked out? By the way, what is Jay Rowden's position within the Democratic Party? ...more
