Sebring Storm learning on the diamond

Talented girls softball squad developing skills

The Sebring Storm, consisting of female athletes ranging in age from 14 to 18, took the field to play their first game of the softball season on Aug. 21-22.

"This is the first tournament of the year and the majority of these girls played high school ball, but others are up and coming freshmen," Cindy Eures said.

The softball team is made up of girls from different schools including Frostproof, Avon Park and Sebring, competing in a United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) tournament gathered at the Highlands County Sports Complex.

Cindy Eures, proud parent of Loren Eures who plays first base, stated, "Micky Pack was in charge of the original team. They were very successful for years. Most of these girls played Dixie Youth. The team you see now is a result of the original team that Micky started. It began as Sebring Storm, but since the girls are from different locations in Highlands County, they refer to themselves as "Storm." These girls want to get better so they play travel ball. This is the only way to get ready for high school ball. It's fun, social and they get to travel all over the state."

Interestingly enough, Sebring Storm was playing another team called Storm. The opponents were from the Lakewood Ranch area near Bradenton. Sebring has traveled to their home field in the past and it was nice to see them visit ours. During the second inning, Emily Gilbert, the team's catcher, went after a ball and slammed into the fence. She caught the ball, got up and dusted herself off.

"It helps them stay focused," said a nearby parent. "They can't get into trouble because they're with us. This is important especially in these teen years. Then there are so many obesity issues; so it's good the girls are getting exercise as well. We have no problems with our group of parents. The girls are good to each other. The game teaches them teamwork which will help them in the workforce. It also helps them to learn to deal with loss; like today, they're not winning this game."

"The pitchers make the team," Eures said. "Kaylee Norris and Chelsea Bassett both serve as Storm's pitchers. They pitched all day in that hot sun in back-to-back games, sharpening their skills. "This game prepares them for high school ball. When they step on that field, they have more confidence and are not intimidated. Chelsea's dad helps out a lot. Several of the dads and moms help by donating their time and helping the kids to play better."

As far as the leadership of the team goes, Cindy stated, "Coach Tim Mann is not a yeller. He uses a positive attitude and encouragement. He keeps them from getting down on themselves. You learn more when you're not being criticized. Charles O'Bannon keeps the book and helps coach. He knows a lot of the rules and he's great at officiating. Tim Ruskin is also one of the coaches and he is just wonderful."

Another parent stated that the "bulk of the players are from younger teams. This is the only exposure they get. Once they get to high school there are more obligations in life. There is a downside though; it's very expensive to play. The families have to commit to put forth money and that's pretty tough in this economy. But if there is a kid who really wants to play, we find a way."

Cindy stated of Vicki Pontius, Director of Parks and Recreation, "She works hard to get people here. Polk County is so big and they put on good tournaments. With expenses, people want to stay close to home so we are very thankful that USSSA is making conscious efforts to keep Sebring on their schedule for tournaments. In the past when a tournament coincided with graduation, every hotel in this town was full. This is great support for our community, keeping us visible. We stay dedicated because our girls stay dedicated. It's so nice to see the girls having fun and working together. We love it here at the Highlands County Sports Complex because the facilities are excellent; the concession is accommodating, and the staff is friendly and helpful."

Even though our local Storm didn't win the game, it was clear to see the dedication and love of the game the girls shared. At a time when so many youths are going astray and moving in the wrong direction, it is comforting to see these girls banding together, sharing team spirit and playing their hearts out.
