The Avon Park boys golf team opened the season on the road and dropped a close match to Lake Wales on Monday afternoon.

The Highlanders shot a four-person team score of 191 for nine holes at Oak Wood Country Club to edge the Red Devils, who tallied a team score of 197.

Leading the way for Avon Park was senior standout Greg Gentry who carded an even par 36, while Trey Marley fired a 45, freshman Waylon Luke came in with a 56 and senior Clint Faircloth rounded out the team scoring with a 59.

"Greg is an excellent player and had a solid round," said first-year Avon Park boys golf coach Shane Ward. "The rest of the team is working hard on improving their games and we just need more experience of playing under pressure."

Avon Park plays Auburndale and Sebring on Thursday at Sun 'N Lake Country Club in the Blue Streaks' season opener.
