Lake Placid Senior softball league play for 2010 got underway on Monday at the Lake June ball fields.

The league consists of some 85 men between the ages of 50 and 91, which make up six teams. This year's sponsors are Central Security, Lake Placid Marine, Yates Insurance, Seminole Tire, Schooni's Restaurant and a new sponsor for this season, Lockhart Service Center.

It was a cold, but sunny day with close games as Central Security prevailed over Lake Placid Marine by a score of 12-6 in a well-played game.

The hitting star of the game and the day was Dave Reed, who had two over-the-fence home runs and a single, driving in eight of the 12 runs for Central Security.

Dana Hurlbut was 3-for-3 and Ken Ferano went 2-for-3 for the winners.

Fred Cooper led the Lake Placid Marine team at the plate, going 4-for-4, followed by team manager Gary Tankersley's three hits, while Bob Roth, Darrell Richards and Kyle Saunders contributed three hits in the losing effort.

Other action

Play on the other field went down to the last out with the Yates Insurance team pounding out a 19-18 victory over the Lockhart Service team.

Lockhart trailed by eight runs going into the last inning when they plated seven and had the tying run on second base when an unnamed batter took a third strike from the winning pitcher, Don Ward.

John Buja led the Insurers at the plate with two inside-the-park home runs and a single.

Jim Morgan added a triple and two singles, while Bob Weiss and Rod Palmer added three hits each for the winners.

Jim Luzon went 5-for-5 at the plate and manager Dusty Hensley went 3-for-4 with a home run in the losing effort.

The final game of the day was also a closely contested affair with the Seminole Tire team going into the last inning with a one-run lead over the Schooni's Restaurant team.

However, Schooni's scored five runs in the last inning and shut out the Seminole team that inning for a 12-8 victory.

There were not a lot of hits in this well-played game with Don Cunningham collecting three hits, including a triple, while Todd Martin had two hits, including a double, and manager Jim Guild added a pair of hits for the winners.

Bill Destifan managed two hits, including a double and Richard Rivera and Ross Anderson had a pair of hits for the Seminole Tire team.

League play will continue through March on Mondays and Wednesday mornings with each team playing 25 games.
