LP Marine defeats Central Security

The Lake Placid Marine team held on for an 18-16 win over the Central Security team in Lake Placid Senior softball league play on Wednesday at the Lake June ball fields.

The Mariners cruised into the last inning with a 10-run lead that looked like a sure win, but the Security team rallied to score eight runs and had the tying runs on base when the final out was made.

The Mariners had 22 hits and would have had several more if not for great plays by third baseman Ken Ferano and three spectacular catches each by outfielders Larry Lane and Dana Hurlbut for the Security team.

Darrell Richards had a perfect day at the plate for the Mariners, going 4-for-4, and Bill Gallager and Jess Hathaway had three hits apiece, with Gallager having a triple and home run among his hits. Gary Tankersley also had an inside-the-park home run for the winners.

The Security team bats were held in check early with good fielding by the Mariners, but in the last inning they came alive and batted around.

Ferrano was 5-for-5 for the day with two doubles, and Bill Card, Ed Engler, Larry Lane and Tom Walsh had three hits apiece, with Lane legging out an inside-the-park home run in the losing effort.

Lockhart trumps Yates Insurance

On the other field, the Lockhart Service Center team scored a 16-12 victory over the Michelle Yates Insurance team.

The combined pitching of George Quay and Dick Harmick once again generally held the opposing team in check.

John Buja, John Ladensack, Rod Palmer and Bob Weiss had three hits each for the Insurers, with Buja and Palmer having triples among their hits. Manager Dusty Hensley continued to lead his team at the plate and in the field, covering a lot of ground and making good catches. At the plate, Hensley and Cliff Bluml had three hits each, but one of the biggest blows was delivered by Dorin Quigg, who had a three-run triple for the winners.

Schooni's silences Seminole fan club

The late game found the Harlan Newby fan club from Wisconsin out in force again. But this time, despite their efforts, there was not much to cheer about for his Seminole Tire team.

The Schooni's Restaurant team routed the Tireman by a score of 26-12.

Roy Oke led the onslaught with a 5-for-5 day, with three fence-clearing home runs and two doubles, driving in 11 of the team's runs. Andy Timermanis was also 5-for-5, including two doubles and five runs scored.

Don Cunningham and Hugh Grimaldi had four hits apiece, with Cunningham legging out an inside-the-park home run, and Jim Guild, Paul Brand and John Kloet had three hits each for the winners.

The "Tiremen" were led at the plate by Howard Carney with four hits, and Richard Rivera and George Lavoie with three hits apiece. Ken Morgan blasted a home run over the left-field fence. Rivera and Lavoie both had doubles among their hits, with Lavoie's hit over the head of the slow center fielder, Don Cunningham. Rocky Soccarras and Harlan Newby also had two hits each in the loss.

The results of the day tightened up the league standings. The Michelle Yates Insurance team and the Schooni's team moved into a virtual tie for the league lead with records of 10-6 and 9-5, respectively. The win by Lockhart moved them into third place with a record of 7-7, followed by Seminole Tire at 7-8, Central Security at 5-8 and Lake Placid Marine at 5-9. League play continues through March.
