McFarling golf scramble

SEBRING
The Spring Lake Golf Resort will host the fourth annual James McFarling Golf Scramble on Saturday, Mar. 6 at Panther Creek Course. Registration will start at 8 a.m., with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cost of the four-person flighted scramble will be $50 per person, which includes team prizes, closest-to-the-pin awards and lunch at Michael's Restaurant. All proceeds benefit the Highlands County Sertoma Junior Golf Tour Scholarship Fund.

SFCC sand volleyball clinic

AVON PARK
The SFCC volleyball team will host sand volleyball clinics through July 18. Individual clinics are $20 per half-hour session ($35 per hour), two-player clinics are $30 per player per hour, three-player clinics are $25 per player per hour, and four-player clinics per player per hour.

Sebring Hall of Fame 5K race

SEBRING INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
The first annual Sebring Hall of Fame 5K race will be held on Saturday, Mar. 13 at Sebring International Raceway. The green flag drops at 7:45 a.m., with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. The pre-registration cost is $25, for which you must receive a completed registration form and entry fee by Mar. 6. Starting Mar. 7, the cost is $30, which includes a long-sleeve Sport Tek dri-fit shirt. The race begins turn 1 and 2, and ends at the historic Sebring International Raceway checkered finish line.

Sun 'n Lake Women's Invitational

SEBRING
The Sun 'n Lake Women's Golf Invitational will be held on Friday, Mar. 26 at Sun 'n Lake Country Club. The shotgun start will begin at 8:30 a.m., with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $50 per person, which includes green fees, cart, lunch and prizes. The deadline to register is Mar. 17.

River Greens golf program

AVON PARK
River Greens Golf Course is bringing adults into the game of golf in a fast, fun and affordable way through the new Get Golf Ready in 5 Days program, which is comprised of five introductory lessons offered by PGA professionals. The program runs through Mar. 20. Insight will include techniques regarding chipping, putting, full swing, half swing and bunker play.

Rotary fundraiser for SFCC

AVON PARK
The Sebring Rotary will host a pulled pork BBQ to benefit the SFCC athletic program on Saturday, Feb. 27. The Rotary Club members will be on hand to serve pork plates consisting of pulled pork, coleslaw, green beans and a roll. The cost is $7 and the food will be served from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The BBQ will coincide with the Panther baseball doubleheader against the University of Tampa, which starts at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from all SFCC student-athletes or by calling the athletic department at 863-784-7035. Tickets can be reserved for purchase the day of the BBQ, as well.

AmVets Post golf tournament

SEBRING
The AmVets Post 21 will host the third annual Tom Berdelle Memorial Golf Scramble on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Harder Hall Country Club. The scramble in to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Highlands County. The four-person scramble costs $50 per person. Sign-in begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Lunch and prizes at AmVets Post afterwards. Interested players can register by Feb. 20 by sending checks made out to AmVets Post 21, dropping them off at the Post, 2029 U.S. 27 South, or Harder Hall Country Club.

AP Chamber golf tourney

The Avon Park Chamber of Commerce will host its 13th annual Chamber Golf Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 6 at Pinecrest Golf Club. Registration will start at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8. Cost of the two-person scramble tournament is $60 per person, which includes golf, lunch, range balls, refreshments on the course and tournament prizes. A $2,000 hole-in-one prize is offered by Cohan Radio Group, and hole sponsorships are available for $100 to receive a sign promoting your business on a hole during the tournament.

Special STARS softball

SEBRING
The Special STARS are getting ready for its 11th annual co-ed softball league season at the Highlands County Softball Complex. Practices are from 3-5 p.m. every Sunday, Feb. 21 and 28 and Mar. 7. The tournament will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 13. Players and coaches are needed.

The team will consist of four special athletes, three men and three women on the field at all times. Athletes need to be at least 16 or older to play. It is slow pitch co-ed softball. Team sponsorships are available for $250, which includes shirts for the entire 15-member team with the sponsors' logo on it, publicity and recognition at the event.

LP Chamber bass tournament

LAKE PLACID
The 13th annual Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce bass tournament will be held on Sunday, Mar. 14 at Lake Istokpoga. This is a team tournament, with only two participants per boat. The entry fee is $100 per team, which includes a $10 big bass.

Group adult golf lessons

SEBRING
Nell Frewin Hays, a PGA professional at Golf Hammock Country Club, is offering group golf instruction for adults. The group clinic will cover all aspects of the game and be held every Saturday at 1 p.m. through March. Cost is $12 per person for one hour of instruction, including range balls. Men and women are invited to sign up by calling the Golf Hammock pro shop at 863-382-2151. Class size is limited to the first 10 players to sign up.

Basic training class

Lisa Celentano is starting a basic training class on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Highlands County YMCA. She is known county-wide as one of the top trainers in conditioning and core strength training. Her class will also offer a sound nutritional program that will help you keep fit and energized. Kegel Bowling Academy

The Kegel Youth Bowling Academy is looking for kids interested in bowling. Ages are from 5-20, with bowling every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and practice on Friday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration fee is $45, which includes shirt, sanctioning fee, first and last week of bowling. McKinney golf tourney

The Sons of Am-Vets sixth annual Bob McKinney golf tournament will be held on March 13 at 8:30 a.m. at Sebring Municipal Golf Course. It will be an 18-hole best-ball scramble with a shotgun start. There will be A, B and C flights, with a cost of $45, which includes food and drink to be served at Am-Vets Post 21 after play.

Winter 9 hole league

River Greens Golf Course is hosting the 9-hole winter league on Thursday afternoons, which began Jan. 14. Cost is $16.82 per person plus tax, with tee times starting at 2:45 p.m. each week. The league is limited to the first 20 people, and a closest-to-the-pin and longest putt contest are awarded each week.

Youth bowling league

LAKE PLACID
The Royal Palms Youth Bowling League (ages 7 and up) is looking for bowlers. Sign-up is $20, which includes a shirt. Bowling is every Saturday at 9 a.m. through April 10. Weekly cost is $11 and includes three games of bowling, shoes and a prize fund. All youth league bowlers are eligible for a reduced rate open bowling and free bowling with instructions on Fridays, 4-6 p.m., and must be accompanied by an adult. Sebring All-Sport Passes now available

Sebring High School is selling All Sport Passes for the 2009-10 school year. The pass is valid for all home sporting events, excluding FHSAA sponsored playoffs and tournaments.

The cost of the pass is $75 per adult and $50 per student. They are on sale in the front office, check payable to Sebring High School.

Junior tennis after-school program

A nine-week junior tennis after-school program for kids ages 4-18 will run now through May 14 at the Thakkar Tennis Center at Sebring Country Club. The program will be run by Horace Watkins, a USPTA certified pro with more than 25 years experience teaching junior tennis.

Golf lessons

Sun 'N Lake Country Club is holding junior clinics every Friday from 3:30-5 p.m.

Professionals Andy Kesling and Marty O'Hora will teach all the fundamentals of the game, including the grip, stance, full swing, chipping, putting, rules, etiquette, etc. No need to sign up; just show up. Cost per clinic is $15.

Sebring girls coach Debby McNall and Kim Darrow will host junior golf clinics beginning Thursdays at 4 p.m. at the Sebring Municipal Golf Course.

The Highlands County YMCA offers four certified personal trainers specializing in many areas to meet your fitness needs. Personal trainers are available for members and non-members. Trainer Mike Ritacco focuses on pre-teen to teenage sport specific and a variety of heath fitness training; Heidi Crutchfield specializes in multi-sport and triathlon training; Sandy Hollinger concentrates on active older adults and weight loss; and Stephen Baily works with power strength training and weight loss.

Heartland Soccer offers program

SEBRING
The Heartland Soccer Club is offering a soccer skills enhancement program for prospective boy and girl players ages 11 through 18.

The program runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the rearmost soccer field at the County Complex off Highlands Avenue in Sebring. Well-known British soccer coach and technical director Paul Brown will guide the players through a series of key drills and scrimmages. The drills and scrimmages are designed to develop or improve the vital defensive, ball handling, dribbling, and passing skills necessary for effective play at the recreation league, middle school, and high school level.The cost is only $20 to those who want to develop or improve their skills and $50 for those who also want to play in the upcoming 3-on-3 tournament in Lake Wales and Bartow.

The program will continue through the summer until the fall/winter soccer season.
