The Lockhart Service Center team continued their sterling play by sweeping a doubleheader from the Seminole Tire team in Lake Placid Senior softball league play on Monday, February 15, at the Lake June ball fields.
A couple of weeks ago, the Lockhart team was in last place in the league, but with their hard fought 14-12 and 15-13 victories over the Tiremen, they have moved up into the middle of the league standings.
The first game saw Dusty Hensley leading the way again for the Lockhart team with a pair of doubles and a home run, followed closely by Bob Poulin, who just missed hitting for the cycle with a single, double and home run. Ron Hanicsh, Jim Lauzon, Moe Pier and Doran Quigg also had two hits each for the winners.
The Tiremen were led at the plate by Tom Giownik with three hits, one being a home run and Ken Morgan had two fence-clearing blasts. Ross Anderson, Bill Destefan, Mike Jurmu, Jim Radcliff and Paul Stephenson had two hits each in this hard-fought contest.
The second game was also close with the same results. In this game, Lockhart was led at the plate by Lauzon with two doubles and a triple, Bob Poulin with a single, double and triple and Cliff Bluml with two doubles. In the field, Pier pulled off several good plays to keep the Seminole team in check.
Tom Giownik continued the long ball with a double and home run, Ken Morgan had two doubles among his three hits, Paul Stephenson had a double and triple and Mike Jurmu, Jim Radcliff and Richard Rivera each had two hits.
Michelle Yates edges LP Marine
Play on the other field saw a lead get away from the last place Lake Placid Marine team in the last two innings, as the league-leading Michelle Yates Insurance team pounded out a 21-14 win. The Insurers were once again led at the plate and in the field by Jim Morgan who made his usual outstanding plays in the field and had two home runs among his three hits. Bob Weiss, Gary Steeves and Rod Palmer had three hits each, with Steeves having a two-bagger among his hits.
The Mariners came up with 27 hits, but failed to hold the Yates team in the last two innings and did not score themselves in those innings. Manager Gary Tankersley led the way at the plate going 4-for-4 with a double and triple, Bill Gallager was 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple, Jeff Stanley had three hits, including two triples and Fred Cooper had a double among his three hits.
In the late game, the Central Security team was down five runs entering the last inning and tied the score only to see the Schooni's Restaurant team push across the winning run in the bottom half of the inning for a 21-20 victory.
Dave Reed did about all he could for the Security men, going 5-for-5 at the plate with three home runs and Ken Ferano and Pete Matthews were 4-for-5 with Ferano having a double and triple. Ed Engler, Dana Hurlbut, Larry Lane, Tom Walsh and Greg Gentile had three hits each in the losing effort with Lane and Engler hitting doubles.
The Schooni's team saw Paul Brand perfect at the plate, going 5-for-5 with 3 RBI, including the winning run, Roy Oke continued his hot hitting with a home run, triple and two doubles producing 5 RBI.
Andy Timermanis was 4-for-4 and Don Cunningham, Hugh Grimaldi and Todd Martin had three hits each and Harvey Jones slammed out two triples for the winners.
The Michelle Yates Insurance team leads the league with a record of 9-3, followed by Schooni's at 7-3, Seminole Tire, is 6-6, Lockhart at 5-6, Central Security at 3-6 and Lake Placid Marine at 3-8.
League play continues through March.
