Dixie Youth Minors enjoy opening day

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Most people associate baseball's opening day with warm spring weather, this most definitely was not the case during the Dixie Youth Minors (9-10) opening day on Saturday.

It was a sea of blankets and jackets between players and spectators during a game between Lewis Chiropractic and Sun 'N Lake Golf Course at Max Long Recreational Complex.

Lewis Chiropractic defeated Sun 'n Lake Golf Course 8-2 in the season opener.

Sun 'N Lake was quick to score in the top of the first with a Desmond Gains run, but Lewis Chiropractic answered back with Trent Lewis, Dayvon Terry and Everett Hurst all scoring in the bottom of the frame.

This set the tone for the rest of the game with Lewis not trailing again. In the second inning, Morgan Dalke would score for Lewis Chiropractic stretching their lead to three runs. After a scoreless top of the third inning by Sun 'N Lake, Lewis racked up four more runs with Terry and Hurst scoring again.

Sun 'N Lake tried to get a rally started in the top of the fourth inning with another Gains run, but unfortunately it was not enough.

After a quiet inning from Lewis, the game was called due to a two-hour time limit.

Bassett Electric rolls to win

Bassett Electric and Highlands Independent Bank faced off in an opening-day game.

Bassett took the field first with Dalton Baker on the mound, and he blanked Highlands Independent in the first inning.

Clayton Osha came out to the mound to try and hold Bassett off.

Bassett kept drawing walk after walk, scoring on five consecutive base-on-balls for a 2-0 lead.

After another walk forced in a run, Hunter Jolly hit an RBI grounder to the pitcher to score Hunter Martinez for a 4-0 lead for Bassett.

Seth Hamilton hit a single into left field to move Tanner Tuck into scoring position. Tuck scored and an errant throw allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate for a commanding 7-0 lead.

A wild throw allowed two runs to score and Charles Jolly followed with a three-run, inside-the-park home run for a 12-0 lead.

Highlands Independent's Jan Martinez singled to right field, but Bassett turned a nifty double play to squelch the rally.

Osha scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to put Highlands Independent on the scoreboard.

After the top of the fourth inning, a 10-run mercy rule was put into effect ending the game.
