When it comes to community support, the Heartland is second to none.
That was proven true once again in Saturday's eighth annual Avon Park American Legion Post 69 golf tournament at Sun 'N Lake Country Club.
The annual event, which was a fundraiser for the JROTC at Avon Park High School, attracted a large turnout, which played 18 holes on the demanding Deer Run course using a four-person scramble format.
After all the eagles and birdies were added up, the talented foursome of Mike Browning, Barry Tupper, Dale Bradley and Brian Valentine finished first in the First Flight with an impressive 17-under-par 55.
The 55 included an eagle on a par 5, two pars and 15 birdies.
Finishing a distant second with a score of 64 was the foursome of Buck Anderson, Dave Miller, Mike Bloss and Bob Rock, while the quartet of Joe Spitale, George Warren, Jerry McClain and Don Dunavin came in third with a 68.
The fine turnout for the tournament helped to increase the amount of money that will go to the JROTC at Avon Park High School.
"We're very thankful for the support from the community," said Avon Park American Legion Post 69 financial officer Bob Burke. "With the way the economy is and the tough times a lot of people are having, we really appreciate everybody coming out and supporting this event."
After the tournament, the field of golfers went to American Legion Post 69 and were served lunch by a group of Avon Park High School JROTC members.
"It was a great day and it wouldn't be possible without the support from the community," said Burke. "The proceeds go to a very worthy organization in the JROTC at Avon Park High School and we're glad to be able to help in any way we can."
