Lake Placid Marine Continues To Roll

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The league leading Lake Placid Marine team continued on their winning streak, topping the Central Security team by a score of 14-8 on Monday, March 16 at the Lake June ball fields.

Moe Pier not only made some excellent plays in the field, but the 73-year-old upstate New York native, Army veteran, State of NY retired Traffic Engineer with 37 years of service and winter resident of Lake Placid since 1996, was unstoppable at the plate. Pier had two triples, a double and a single.

Hugh Grimaldi and Kyle Saunders chipped in with three hits each and substitute Don Cunningham had two doubles for the Mariners.

Central Security once again kept it close in the early innings, but faded in the end.

Dana Hurlbut with a double and two singles and Richard Rivera with three hits led the Security men at the plate. The 91-year-old ageless wonder, Al Chipps, did his part with a base knock, but once again it was not enough to break the Central Security teams losing streak.

After leading the league near the mid-point of the schedule, injuries to, and absences of, key players have contributed to their seven game losing streak.

Play on the other field saw the Seminole Tire team keep pace with the league leader with a 16-11 victory over the Michelle Yates Insurance team.

The Tiremen were led by Cliff Bluml, who played his usual outstanding game in left field and had a home run, triple and two-bagger at the plate.

Harley Smith with excellent pitching and went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a home run and a double.

Mammoth Drew Whittaker, who was 2-for-3 with a double, shook the ground as he ran the bases. Ross Anderson led the Insurers at the plate with a home run and two singles, Dusty Hensley had two doubles and Ray Heisenberg added two hits.

Lake Placid Marine continues to lead the league with a record of 11-6 followed closely by Seminole Tire at 10-7, the idle Schoonis Family Restaurant team at 8-8, Yates at 7-10 and Central Security at 6-11.

Most teams have three games left in the 20 game schedule which ends on March 30.
