Greg Gentry, a standout on the Avon Park High School boys golf team, used his local knowledge and skill to shoot a 1-under 71 to grab the first round lead of the Bill Jarrett golf tournament on Saturday at River Greens golf course.

Gentry holds a 1-shot advantage over Mike Browning, who is alone in second after an even-par 72, while Tim Devlin, Steve Hall and Greg Knowles are just three strokes back at 74,

Gary Williams and Larry Roy are tied at 75, while Mark Stockeland is at 76.

Randy Proctor, Mike Cleghorn and James Casey are within striking distance at 77.

Defending champion Walt Shirey withdrew after playing the 13th hole on Saturday.

The prestigious tournament concludes today with a final 18 holes over the tight and demanding 6,700-yard, par 72 River Greens layout.

"There are a lot of very good players close to the lead," said River Greens professional Jason Beatty. "Most of the leaders finished before the rain fell and those are some pretty good scores.

"The course is in good condition and it's going to come down to who keeps the ball in play and makes the most putts."

Tee times begin at 7:30 this morning and spectators are invited to come out and watch some of the top amateurs in the Heartland compete for the coveted title."
