Devils, Dragons Take First Leaps

Lake Placid coach Scott Morgan walked on the bus and told his team a very simple message after both the Dragon boys and girls track teams took second at Thursday's season-opening meet at Joe Franza Stadium.

"I told the kids as they loaded on the bus that this was the best team I've seen as far as heart and soul for Lake Placid," Morgan said. "They took us by surprise."

Avon Park's Tia Nobles won the shot put with a toss of 30-feet, 11 inches and the discus with a throw of 97-feet, 1 inch to lead the Red Devil girls to first place in Thursday's season-opening track meet at Joe Franza Stadium.

Avon Park finished first in the four-team meet with 102 points, while Lake Placid placed second with 83.5, Hardee came in third with 63.5 and Walker Memorial Academy did not record a team score.

Red Devil Jamee Hawthorne won the long jump event with a leap of 15 feet, 2 1/2 inches and teammate Beonca Godfrey took third with 13-feet, 8 inches.

Avon Park's Zykia Hart placed second in the triple jump with an effort of 24-feet, 8 inches and claimed third in the 100 hurdles in 19.80.

Lake Placid's Thalia Espinosa won the 3,200-meter race in a time of 14:33 and Green Dragon Yuribia Terrones placed second in the 100 meters in 13.80.

Hardee won the boys four-team meet with 78.5 points, while Lake Placid came in second with 70, Avon Park claimed third with 58.5 and Walker Memorial Academy finished fourth with 17.

Green Dragon Steven Guelff won the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 44.03, finished first in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 8 inches and took second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.26.

Avon Park was led by Teddy Allen, who placed second in the shot put with a toss of 41-feet, 9 inches and the Red Devil athlete finished third in the high jump by clearing 5-feet, 4 inches.

Avon Park's Ricky Taylor breezed to first in the 100 meters in 11.71 and also won the 400 meters in 54.50.

The next big track meet in the Heartland will be at Lake Placid High School on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
